DEPOT
HISTORY:
The
depot was constructed in 1909 as a typical Santa Fe County Seat Standard.
Owing to
the
importance
of Norman, its university community, and location on the route of Santa Fe's
Chicago to Houston Mainline the
depot has been remodeled numerous times. The depot
served
the Santa Fe and Amtrak faithfully until October 9, 1979 when the last
trains between
Chicago and Houston, Amtrak's Lone Star
was discontinued. The station remained open into
the
early 1980's as a Santa Fe freight agency.
On
June 14, 1999 Amtrak returned in the form of the Heartland Flyer operating
between
Oklahoma City and Fort Worth daily.
